build your own acai bowl
its been noted a number of times that i lean towards simple things and making acai bowls is no different. building your own acai bowl is a fun and exciting way to change up your smoothie game. it’s a healthy, raw vegan, plant-based, nutrient dense form of fuel.
a few weeks ago a friend sent me the downside of smoothies from the new york times. i don’t disagree that smoothies can be overloaded with sugars. and just about anything has a downside.
unless it’s made fresh at a smoothie bar i wouldn’t buy a one and ultimately it can depend on what’s in your smoothie to debate the health of it. and the debate on sugar stretches far and wide. i stand nowhere near supporting refined sugars but i’m not against sugar through fruit.
sweet is a natural flavor detected by our taste buds and to give it a little attention comes from ayurvedic theories of tasting all the flavors. if i cover my sweet craving with fresh fruits and juices, i’m convinced i’m something better for myself than eating pastries and custard or cookies, even if they’re all gluten free.
i also love consuming something sweet and dense following a workout so this build your own bowl comes in handy quite often.
acai mixture:
1 unsweetened acai superfruit pack (remove from freezer shortly before using and run below warm water)
1 ripe banana
2 tsp maca powder (optional)
toppings:
sliced and diced fresh fruit, cacao nibs, bee pollen, shredded coconut, buckies, grawnola, nuts and seeds, etc.
build your own bowl:
process acai, banana, maca powder in food processor or blender until smooth. i tend to use my food processor because it’s easier to scrape out pour mixture in a bowl and add your favorite toppings. serves one.
enjoy!
have you tried the acai berry before? how have you tried it and what did you think? what are your go-to toppings? i’d love to hear more in the comments below.
This looks great!
I would love to make my own acai bowl, I thought it would be quite difficult but this actually sounds doable. I might give this a try, thank you for the tips 🙂

Live smoothie bowls! Will have to try your delicious version soon!
I need to eat more of these! They seem to be all the rage, so they must be good!
they’re so simple which is right up my alley!
i also don’t disagree smoothies can be really sugary but i prefer to make mine green – i actually haven’t tried the acai berry yet but want to! as for toppings i am coconut OBSESSED right now for some reason!
i usually go green too but also need to be able to switch it up now and again. the acai berry is very low on the glycemic index so it’s still super healthy…and coconut is a wonderful thing to be obsessed with!!
This sounds so delicious, and such a great idea! What a lovely way to start the day!
it’s perfectly refreshing during the warmer months for sure!
